What is Emotional Mind-Body-Spirit (EMDR) therapy? It is a psychotherapy technique that diagnoses, treats and prevents emotional, physical and psychological distress resulting from traumatic events. The process includes the use of advanced imaging technology, such as Computerized Tomography (CT) Scanning, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ultrasound (US), to examine the brain’s workings in various bodily functions and illnesses. When an Emotional Behavioral Therapy is used on patients who are suffering from eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia and binge-eating disorder, the patients are exposed to images, sounds, smells and other sensations associated with the eating disorder in order to help them realize that they are affected by the disorder and that they need help to overcome it. What does EMDR do to help those who suffer from Eating Disorders? EMDR allows the therapist to find the core emotions or underlying stress causing the clients’ disorders. The underlying trauma may be caused by a sexual assault, childhood abuse or a physical illness. The treatment sessions help the clients understand the root cause of their problem, confront the issues and provide hope by changing the behaviors or thought patterns that are enabling the client’s disorder. When you understand your true self-image and accept yourself as you are, you can then begin to change the negative thoughts and behaviors that are denying you your true body image and sense of worth.

In addition to helping the client to recognize their body image problem, EMDR helps them find healthy coping mechanisms by helping them replace their dysfunctional behaviors with healthy ones. By discovering the nature of their underlying stress causing behaviors and then replacing them with more appropriate ones, clients can learn to cope with their eating disorders more effectively.
