Choosing the Right Ketamine Clinic
The results of the group, published in 2000 in Biological Psychiatry, were widely overlooked. The study was thin, and scientists were hesitant to follow up because of ketamine’s popularity as a party drug. “They didn’t believe you could get better from depression in a few hours,” Charney says. “They’d never seen that before.” It takes weeks or months for regular antidepressants such as Prozac and Wellbutrin to kick in. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, as many as 30 percent of suicidal patients don’t respond to traditional antidepressants. Ketamine as Treatment
Six years later, a replica study with 17 patients was initiated by Charney, who had gone on to work for the National Institutes of Health. 70 percent of the subjects went into remission within a day of receiving one ketamine infusion. Scientists at institutions such as Yale, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Baylor College of Medicine have since conducted scores of additional experiments to corroborate the results. Additional experiments indicate that ketamine works by creating long-lasting brain improvements, reversing stress-and-depression-induced neural damage, and potentially decreasing levels of inflammation and cortisol.
Based on the growing popularity of off-label administration to treat acute depression, Ketamine has continued to gain widespread interest in scientific literature and the media. In his FoxNews blog, Dr. Keith Ablow sang his praises, “I have now treated about one hundred patients with intravenous ketamine. The findings reflect those of therapy research studies; dramatic recoveries have been experienced by more than two-thirds of my patients. Their deeply low mood, lack of energy, decreased self-esteem, and even suicidal thinking very frequently yields intimate feelings.”
The ketamine success storeys I have seen include patients once hobbled by depression and out of work for years who returned to their jobs within weeks of therapy, patients whose anxiety made it almost difficult to leave the house who can now go on holidays that require travel, and young people who have been motivated by underlying stress and self-loathing to cut themselves but have now stopped.
